Akemi Almeida is the founder and co-owner of Sub Valley Sound. In December 2018, she spearheaded a squad purchasing a Funktion-One sound system from Eugene, OR. She assessed the opportunity, weighed risks versus rewards, and through excellent and persistent communication, closed the sale and began her proprietorship over what is now Sub Valley Sound. Very quickly, her group’s venture began paying dividends as they received weekly bookings from their Cairo family. From patron to partner, a dream come true. Yet, this is only one of Akemi’s many accomplishments.

Akemi majored in communication and minored in hospitality at DePaul University. Four years later, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree. Perhaps this is why Akemi is such a warm, compassionate, considerate, and well-spoken soul. Her gentle voice conveys focused thoughts without wavering or waffling. Most excellent, for this young woman has much brilliance to share.

DePaul University is also where Akemi discovered Students for Sensible Drug Policy. This is

Akemi

thelargest network of young people in the nation focused on putting an end to the war on drugs by eradicating oblivious and obsolete drug policies in favor of initiatives influenced by evidence and kindness. Respect for fellow human beings instead of demonization. By offering empathy and sympathy towards others, more progress will be made in a shorter time than has ever been accomplished by ineffective ‘tough love’ governmental regulations “attempting” to control supply of drugs and the population at large. Akemi’s membership in the SSDP effectively altered the course of her life by granting her education on how to approach drug policy, humanely.

Akemi is also an active member of the cannabis industry and, not surprisingly, made her entry through drug policy advocacy. She’s held many different positions and worked in various facilities of size and scope. From mom-and-pop pot shops to hulking corporate grow-operations, each opportunity expanded her knowledge in a fast-evolving cannabis landscape. She’s also the type to respond to unfairness from an employer by organizing the labor force into a union. Boss moves from Akemi. She cares about her co-workers and when she sees others being taken advantage of, she’s one to stand up and say, “Not today, fella!” One shouldn’t be surprised if she’s eventually running her own dispensary.

Akemi thrives in nature and adores Japanese culture. Makes sense, Akemi is a Japanese name meaning ‘bright’ and ‘beautiful’. One of her favorite practices from Japanese culture is Shinrin-yoku, or ‘forest bathing’. When she needs to heal and restore her inner peace, she spends time amongst woods and trees rejuvenating her spirit. She highly recommends it.

Akemi Almeida is a well-rounded leader to say the least and her efforts have guided Sub Valley Sound into flourishing as an enterprise. There’s more on the way from Akemi and Sub Valley Sound as she is constantly looking for ways to branch out and continue growing.
